World Environment Day 2021

We are celebrating the 2021 World Environment Day by holding several events on the weekend of June 5 and 6. The events are co-organized by the Northern Aegean Prefecture, Municipality of Lesvos, and the Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest and the Kalloni EIC.

PROGRAM:

  • Saturday, June 5:

 

10:00 - Birdwatching event at the Petrified Forest Park

Our target species will be the breeding birds of the general area of the Petrified Forest of Lesvos that is also a Special protected Area for Birds (Natura 2000 network site).

12:30 - Educational activity "The Green Museum" at the Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest, Sigri

Educational program for kids and presentation about the recent energy efficiency improvement of the Natural History Museum of the Petrified Forest of Lesvos building.

18:30 - Evening birdwatching event at the Kalloni Salt Pans 

From the late afternoon towards dusk, we will observe the breeding wetland species of the area aiming to introduce participants to birdwatching and, at the same time, outline the importance of the Kalloni Gulf coastal wetlands' protected area. 

  • Sunday, June 6 (in collaboration with the "Lesvos Plastic Free" organization)

10:00 - Cleaning at the Kalloni Salt Pans area (meeting point at the NW corner bird hide)

11.00 - Educational activities for kids of all ages inspired by the Flamingo (at the Kalloni EIC in Skala Kallonis)

12:30 - Presentation entitled «Plastics in our seas» and crafts and games activities with recyclable materials (at the Kalloni EIC, Skala Kallonis) 

Adults and kids older than 8 years old may participate in our event, but families are welcomed! No more than 10 will be allowed in a birdwatching group (infants included) and, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it is required to register for the event. Groups will be asked to arrive at the meeting point (see map) at a preset time (9:00, 10:00, 11:00, or 12:00) and each guided trip will last approximately 50'. Please bring your own binoculars if possible, although binoculars will be available by the center if needed. Masks are required for visitors over the age of 10.  Thank you for your understanding and your cooperation.
