Come join us on two-morning birdwatching events by the Kalloni Gulf most important wetlands for breeding birds:
- Saturday, May 29, 09-00-13:00 at the Polichnitos Salt Pans (meeting point at the side of the pans north of Skala Polichnitos village)
- Sunday, May 30, 09-00-13:00 at the Kalloni Salt Pans (meeting point at the hide of the NW corner of the pans)
We will try to find most of the area's very special bird species (Cretzschmar's and Cinereous Buntings, Western Rock Nuthatch, Black-eared and isabelline Wheatears, etc) and the common butterfly and reptile species.
The Pied Avocet, the Black-winged Stilt, the Common, and the Little Tern are only a few of the wetland birds that are responsible for the designation of the Kalloni Gulf coastal wetlands as a Natura 2000 Network Protected Area (code GR4110007). All four species are summer visitors to our area and the Kalloni Gulf salt pans are the sites where most of their breeding pairs are recorded each year. We will be able to observe the pairs near their nests and while defending their territories from intruders or incubating their eggs, from safe distance, causing no disturbance to them. The two wetlands are also very important areas for migrating wader and waterfowl species as very special and sensitive brackish and saltwater habitats.
Adults and kids older than 8 years old may participate in our event, but families are welcomed! No more than 10 will be allowed in a group (infants included) and, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it is required to register for the event. Groups will be asked to arrive at the meeting point (see map) at a preset time (9:00, 10:00, 11:00, or 12:00) and each guided trip will last approximately 50'. Please bring your own binoculars if possible, although binoculars will be available by the center if needed. Masks are required for visitors over the age of 10. Thank you for your understanding and your cooperation.
