A group of teachers from various parts of Greece, invited by the North Aegean Region as part of a targeted action to develop student tourism on the island, visited the Kalloni Environmental Information Center and the Kalloni Wetland. They participated in birdwatching activities and learned about the significance of these ecosystems.
The teachers’ visit began at the largest wetland on Lesvos, the Kalloni Salt Pans. There, they were briefed by Ms. Eleni Galinou, Environmentalist, and Mr. Efstratios Zgourni, Forester. They had their first hands-on experience with birdwatching during a small walk on the eastern side of the salt pans, where, that morning, many flamingos had gathered. With the help of individual binoculars and telescopes provided by the Kalloni Environmental Information Center staff, the teachers observed the flamingos closely, along with other birds wintering in the region, such as herons and ducks. The activity aimed to provide them with as much information as possible for an educational program for students, focused on wetlands and the birds that inhabit them.
Next, the group visited the Kalloni Environmental Information Center. There, they attended a presentation on all the available educational programs of the Lesvos Petrified Forest Natural History Museum, focusing on the modern nature of Lesvos for secondary school students. Finally, they toured the permanent exhibition of the center, which highlights the Kalloni Gulf and other important ecosystems of the island.
The teachers expressed significant interest in birdwatching and other water organisms through the programs offered by the Kalloni Environmental Information Center and the Lesvos Petrified Forest Natural History Museum. They hoped to return to Lesvos soon with their students to experience the region's natural wonders firsthand.
