Last Wednesday and Thursday (19 and 20/04), during the best period for witnessing the spring migration of birds on Lesvos, we organised a field trip to explore the west side of the Kalloni Salt Pans, making use of the newly renovated bird hides of the area. We observed tens of Black-winged Stilts, Pied Avocets, Ruffs and Marsh Sandpipers, several Black Storks, White Storks and Ruddy Shelducks and a few individuals of more scarce species such as Spur-winged Plover, Glossy Ibis and Black-tailed Godwit. Also swallows and swifts, Whinchats etc. On Thursday afternoon, we also observed the first group of foreign birders.
Upcoming trip on next Saturday
The last field trip of the aster holidays will occur on Saturday, April 22, 2023, at 16:00-20:00 in two groups of less than 15 individuals after booking (you can participate in either the 16:00 or the 18:00 group). The activity is for ages older than eight years and has no fee. The initial meeting point is the bird hide at the west side of the Kalloni Salt Pans (No. 3); we will move towards the west and south parts of the pans, ending at the next hide (No. 2).
