Come join us on Sunday May 16, 2021 for a guided birdwatching event at the Kalloni Salt Pans, our first outdoor trip after the end of the lockdown, to celebrate World Migratory Bird Day 2021 (for this spring).
We will try to cover most of the area's habitats: salt pans interior and surrounding canal, Mediterranean temporal ponds and cultivations to observe as many different bird species as possible! We will mainly have the unique opportunity to observe the spring passage of migratory birds from the island's wetlands, being at its peak during this period. This year the seasonal wetlands south and west of the Kalloni Pans are still retaining water, due to unusual late spring rainfall. We expect to find (recorded these last days at the spot): Woodsandpipers, Ruffs, Curlew Sandpipers, Little Stints, and other wetland birds such as Black Storks, Squacco Herons, White-winged and Whiskered Terns, together with Bee-eaters, Black-headed Buntings et. al. Also, the breeding species of the area: Common and Little Tern, Pied Avocet, and Black-winged Stilt.
Adults and kids older than 8 years old may participate in our event, but families are welcomed! No more than 10 will be allowed in a group (infants included) and, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, it is required to register for the event. Groups will be asked to arrive at the meeting point (see map) at a preset time (9:00, 10:00, 11:00, or 12:00) and each guided trip will last approximately 50'. Please bring your own binoculars if possible, although binoculars will be available by the center if needed. Masks are required for visitors over the age of 10. Thank you for your understanding and your cooperation.
